The Milwaukee County Office of Sustainability is seeking a part-time Media and Communications Intern to design and execute a targeted communications strategy supporting the rollout of the Climate Action 2050 (CA50) Plan implementation. This intern will play a hands-on role in shaping how sustainability priorities are communicated internally across County departments and externally to the public. The intern will research, analyze, and collaborate with Office of Sustainability staff and County partners to produce clear, actionable communications deliverables, including:
• A communications strategy
• An editorial/content calendar
• Standardized messaging and templates for internal and external use
Position Description:
The Media and Communications Intern position is a part-time, temporary internship. This position will last approximately 11 weeks and be completed in a hybrid environment – see Work Schedule. This internship is ideal for students seeking applied experience at the intersection of local government, sustainability policy, and strategic communications. The intern will gain exposure to executive-level decision-making, interdepartmental coordination, and public-facing government communications.
Reporting to the Director of the Office of Sustainability, and in close collaboration with other Milwaukee County staff, the Media and Communications Intern will assist with a range of tasks, including:
• Lead updates to the Office of Sustainability’s public-facing communications platforms, including the website and applicable social media accounts.
• Produce print and digital communications materials aligned with County branding standards.
• Support development of an overarching outreach strategy to drive targeted audiences to sustainability programs and resources.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
What Success Looks Like:
The successful intern will leave this role having produced ready-to-use communications materials and a strategic framework that supports implementation of Milwaukee County’s Carbon Neutrality Policy and Climate Action 2050 Plan.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Currently enrolled or recent graduate of an accredited college undergraduate or graduate degree program.
• Demonstrated ability to produce clear, concise written communications for multiple audiences and platforms.
• Working knowledge of public marketing, branding, or communications principles.
• Proficiency in at least one design or content creation platform (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Canva) and Microsoft Office.
• Strong attention to detail and proofreading skills.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and work independently in a hybrid environment.
• Access to reliable transportation for required in-person work.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Pursuing or recently completed a bachelor’s or graduate degree in Communications, Marketing, Environmental Studies, Political Science, Design, or a related field.
• Experience creating communications for a public, nonprofit, or mission-driven organization.
• Demonstrated interest in local government, sustainability, and/or equity-focused work.
• Prior experience with social media content planning, analytics, or media campaign development.
Work Schedule:
Anticipated start date: June 1, 2026, lasting approximately 11 weeks. The intern will work up to 20 hours a week, with flexibility to accommodate academic schedules. The intern is expected to work in person at least two days per week at 600 N Plankinton Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53203. Remaining hours may be performed remotely or at various locations within Milwaukee County to be determined. This position is employed through a managed service provider. The internship is temporary and does not receive any benefits.
