Marketing & Community Engagement Intern (Midwest Mujeres)
This role is posted on behalf of Midwest Mujeres, a friend of the UW-Madison Department of Communication Arts and School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Applications submitted through Handshake will not be reviewed.
Midwest Mujeres is seeking a student interested in digital communications, community outreach, and grassroots marketing. The intern will support the promotion of our educational programs and community events through a combination of digital and community-based outreach strategies.
Responsibilities may include:
- Assisting with press release distribution and media outreach
- Developing word-of-mouth and street marketing strategies
- Supporting social media engagement, tagging, and boosting content
- Creating marketing materials using Canva
- Updating website content through the Wix platform
- Identifying outreach partners and community connections
- Assisting with event promotion and audience engagement efforts
- Supporting community storytelling and communications initiatives
Desired skills:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Interest in marketing, communications, nonprofit work, or community engagement
- Working knowledge of Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Forms, Drive)
- Working knowledge of Canva for creating digital marketing materials
- Familiarity with website updates and content management, preferably using Wix (will train the right person)
- Experience with social media platforms and digital outreach strategies: IG + LI and DM massaging
- Ability to work independently, manage projects, and meet deadlines
- Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus, but not required
Schedule & location:
- Approximately 10 hours per week
- Flexible schedule
- Hybrid position with remote work and occasional in-person meetings or events in Madison
- Weekly supervision meetings on Tuesdays with the Executive Director
Compensation:
- $500-$1,000 stipend for the semester
Learning opportunities:
- The student will gain hands-on experience in nonprofit marketing, grassroots outreach, community engagement, and digital communications. They will learn how storytelling can be used to build community, increase participation, and support social impact initiatives.
- The intern will work closely with a Latina-led nonprofit serving women entrepreneurs, storytellers, and community leaders. Students interested in social impact marketing, women’s leadership, entrepreneurship, community storytelling, and nonprofit communications are especially encouraged to apply.
- The internship also offers opportunities to attend Midwest Mujeres events, networking gatherings, and community programs, providing exposure to local leaders, entrepreneurs, and nonprofit professionals.

Note: We are less interested in polished corporate marketing and more interested in a student’s ability to communicate clearly, think creatively, and connect with community audiences.
