Spring Intern with Policy & Legislation Team

Spring Semester 2023 Paid, Part-Time Placement for Undergraduate Students
 
The Policy & Legislation (P&L) team in the Executive Division of the New York State Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is seeking applications from undergraduate students who are interested in government, political science or other relevant areas for a paid, part-time placement during the 2023 spring semester. 
 
The P&L team develops and manages the OAG’s legislative agenda and prepares the Attorney General for policy or legislation-focused events. P&L collaborates with OAG Bureaus to generate legislation and policy ideas, advances the Office’s policy priorities by working with members of the legislature and relevant stakeholders, and tracks legislation and budget bills that impact the OAG.
 
Please be advised that P&L collaborates with legal bureaus but does not itself engage in legal casework.
 
Duties of the student assistant will include, but not be limited to the following:
·       Track legislation that is relevant to the OAG;
·       Monitor local and national news sources to identify issues that are relevant to the OAG;
·       Conduct legal/policy research and draft supportive documents including memos; and
·       Draft briefing documents for events the Attorney General is attending.
 
P&L is seeking applicants with the following qualifications:
·       Applicants who are currently enrolled in full-time undergraduate degree programs;
·       Excellent research and writing skills;
·       Knowledge of and/or interest in the legislative process, particularly the New York State Legislature;
·       Flexibility, including self-managing competing priorities and multiple time-sensitive tasks simultaneously;
·       Highly collaborative with effective interpersonal and communication skills;
·       Proactive with a willingness to take on special projects;
·       Proficiency in Word, Excel, and Outlook is required; and
·       Prior experience using LRS is a plus.
              
Placement Details
  • The OAG is offering students two program format options during the 2023 spring semester: hybrid or remote. Please review the following for information about each format option.
1)    A hybrid placement option, which means students may report to their designated workstation up to two (2) days per week.
-      Since students working in this format will have an in-office presence, confirmation of their vaccination status is required. If students are not fully vaccinated, they may be required to provide regular negative COVID-19 PCR tests at a frequency determined by the agency. The agency will consider religious and reasonable accommodations. For more information, please contact recruitment@ag.ny.gov.
-      On the days students will be working remotely, they will need to have access to a reliable computer, a secure internet connection, a phone and a sufficiently quiet and private workspace to telework.
2)    A remote placement. Students in this placement format must have access to a reliable computer, a secure internet connection, a phone and a sufficiently quiet and private workspace to telework.
  • Applications from students completing their first year of college/university during the 2022-23 academic year will not be considered.
  • To be eligible for a paid placement, applicants must be able to demonstrate they are full-time undergraduate students in good academic standing as defined by their schools.
  • Students hired for paid spring placements may begin their placements on January 18, 2023 or after.
  • Applicants must be available to work 15 hours per week during regular business hours for 10-12 weeks.
  • The selected candidate will be hired as a student assistant and paid hourly at the undergraduate student rate, which is $15.00. 
  • U.S. citizenship and NYS residency are not required, but applicants must be eligible to be employed in the U.S.

2.     Resume
-      Ensure your resume is complete and current prior to submitting your application.
3.     List of three (3) references.
-      Submit only professional (i.e., supervisor or professor) references.
-      Indicate the nature and duration of your relationship to each reference.
-      Include contact information and email addresses for each reference.
-      Please note, your references will not be contacted until after you interview for the placement.
4.     Writing Sample
-  You may choose to submit a paper that you completed for school or a writing sample that you produced during an internship or externship.
-  Submit a sample that demonstrates your ability to analyze and organize information into an effective document.
·    Failure to submit a complete application will delay the consideration of your candidacy.
