Summer 2023 India Science and Health Intern

NRDC is a non-profit environmental advocacy organization. We use law, science, and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure the rights of all people to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our people helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act and many of the implementing regulations. Today, our team of more than 700 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy advocates, communications experts, and others work across the United States and the globe from our offices in Beijing; Bozeman, Montana; Chicago; New Delhi; New York; San Francisco; Santa Monica; and Washington, D.C.
 
NRDC is seeking an India Science and Health Intern to work with the International and Science office teams associated with our Chicago or Washington, D.C. office.
 
Position Summary
 
NRDC is seeking an Intern to work with its science office and international teams focusing on analysis, research and report development, to pursue NRDC’s strategic priority areas of climate change, health & cities, and international climate policy. The Internship is part of the India Program and the Science Office and works with experts both internally and externally with expertise in climate change, health, energy efficiency, climate resilience and air pollution.
 
The Internship will provide an excellent opportunity to investigate major barriers and potential solutions for climate resilience and health, air quality, and decarbonization goals. The Internship includes analysis of India’s renewable market, energy efficiency, climate adaption focused on heat stress, air pollution, and implementing the country's climate goals. Work products may include stand-alone documents or memos that will be incorporated into NRDC reports, factsheets, blogs, briefings, and presentations. The Intern will have the opportunity to engage with other stakeholders and policymakers.

Responsibilities


  • Provide support in scientific review of written materials.
  • Generate impactful outreach materials (e.g. blogs, memos, public briefs, and reports) that support India’s efforts to strengthen resilience to extreme heat and air pollution, shift to renewables deployment and decarbonization, in coordination with NRDC experts.
  • Write research pieces and review written materials on NRDC’s focus issue areas in India including climate health, clean energy, clean transportation and climate policy.
  • Provide support on internal and external communication on the India work such as through powerpoint presentations, talking points, etc.
  • Help increase the focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion in NRDC’s India work.
  • Serve as a resource to NRDC experts in India on research and publications.


Qualifications


Required
  • Commitment to NRDC’s mission and values
  • Academic credentials in climate change, climate health, environmental studies, sustainability or related topics
  • Demonstrated research ability
  • Robust interpersonal skills to interact with colleagues and partners
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to participate on teams that work collaboratively toward shared outcomes across programs and organizations across multiple time zones
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to handle multiple work streams
  • Demonstrated intercultural competence
  • Highly analytical, entrepreneurial, and comfortable working in a matrixed organization and with a global, intercultural team
  • Professional excellence and a real passion for working on global sustainable energy issues

Preferred
  • Knowledge of statistical software
  • Experience working in India or other developing countries

This position is a paid internship with a stipend of $10,000 paid bi-weekly over the course of 10 weeks.
 
The incumbent will not qualify as an employee, fellow, volunteer, or independent contractor of NRDC, nor will the incumbent be guaranteed employment at the end of the internship term.
 
Our offices are open and we are operating in a hybrid model. We offer NRDCers flexibility, and we encourage them to come into the office and spend meaningful time there in collaboration with their colleagues. We call this purposeful presence.
